Smoking ....the basics covered please

Where to start...here is a picture of my BBQ, it's 80cm x 42cm grill size, 2 trays for coals and both fully adjustable with front doors.

4 small vents as on the photos...

I'd like to do a beer can chicken, I can find a recipe on tinterweb, but that won't give me personal experiences.

Any do's and dont's?? 

Could someone take the time to run me through the set up too please??
