Any help on this would be much appreciated!

I'm currently using a Nimbus 4 Burner Gas BBQ, been using it for a couple of years now and all of a sudden what I think is the main burner electrode (please correct me if I'm wrong there but it is a thin wire that is behind the main burner knob) keeps catching a light and into flames. This disappears when I stop trying to ignite the burners but it seems to have frazzled the electrode itself. It’s the white char on the orange wire in the image What is causing this issue? And is the damage caused a problem? Thanks in advance!
